Mental Map

Mental mapping is all about perception.  How a city, neighborhood, or area may be perceived in one person's eye is different from another's.  Mental mapping allows for an individual to express their geological surroundings through personal expression.  The map displayed above is a mental map of an individual's neighborhood.  This person used their own scale to show space and size in comparison to the buildings and nature around them.  They noted sidewalks, marked street names, placed trees and shrubbery in its noted location.  The cartographer followed a color pattern that associated roads and sidewalks with one color that was not duplicated anywhere else in the map.  Because mental maps are often created using memories and individual feelings and thoughts sometimes they are not vey detailed which may make it difficult when someone else tries to associate the map with an exact location.
